Mission Statement: The Sheboygan County Activity and Nutrition Coalition mission is to prevent obesity and improve the health of children, families, and communities through education and promotion of better nutrition and increased physical activity.

Chair Person(s): Jeri Dreikosen RN, BSN, jdreikosen@sheboygan.k12.wi.us and Amy Betke RN, BSN, betkeafb@co.sheboygan.wi.us

Committee Members: Carolyn Verhage, Dawn Kind, Diane Liebenthal, Elise Opel, Jackie Kotyza, Jane Jensen, Jean Pittner, Kelly Boeldt, Kris Fritz, Mary Paluchniak, Mary Raml, Melissa Giebel, Patty Fallon, Sherri Samuels-Fuerst, Vicky Schneider, and Wendy Meyer.

Committee Goals:

  • To promote healthy lifestyles to all age groups.
  • Be a community resource to increase community exposure/education for local events.
  • Increase participation numbers in the Employee Fitness Day and Family Health & Fitness Day events

Brief History/Overview: Coalition was started in May 2003, as a result of receiving a Maternal and Child Health grant from the State of Wisconsin. The premise of the grant was to promote public health nutrition leadership, by forming nutrition coalitions that would focus on child obesity. As obesity is a multi-factorial problem, the coalition attempts to utilize the socio-ecological model to evoke behavior change in the areas of nutrition and physical activity among individuals, families and our greater Sheboygan County community.

Movin' in March

The Sheboygan County Activity and Nutrition (SCAN) Coalition is promoting Movin' in March throughout the month of March.

Multiple organizations around the area will be hosting free or reduced cost exercise opportunities for families.  A variety of activities including swimming, dancing, and trail walking will be available at different locations in Sheboygan County.

Research continues to show the value of physical activity upon the development and maintenance of good health for all ages.  Come and take advantage of the local venues during the month of March while "movin' to improve" the overall personal health and fitness of you and your family.

National Employee Health and Fitness Day - May 16th, 2012

With healthcare costs out pacing inflation every year, most companies are looking for ways to reduce or control their employee health related expenses.  National Employee Health & Fitness day is a perfect event to help promote physical fitness and wellness for your employees.  This year's event will be held on Wednesday, May 16th across the country.

In recognition of this national event, in the past Sheboygan County businesses have participated in a little "healthy competition."  See the attached for the details of Sheboygan County's Let's Get Physical challenge.

This year, the Sheboygan County Activity and Nutrition Coalition (SCAN) is again sponsoring the event.  However, since everyone has plenty of meetings to attend, we decided to skip the luncheon this year and simply have companies register for the Let's Get Physical Sheboygan County event (see links below).

Each organization that registers for the event will receive a 2012 Let's Get Physical Sheboygan County - National Employee Health & Fitness Day packet with tons of information to help you plan your organization's event.  In addition, a 2012 Let's Get Physical Sheboygan County - National Employee Health & Fitness Day T-shirt will be included to use in promoting your event.

If you are interested in joining us for the county-wide challenge, complete the 2012 Company Registration form at the link below, and return it to Sherri Samuels-Fuerst, c/o Sargento Foods Inc. by Friday, May 4th.  The more companies, the better….someone has to beat Curt G. Joa!!!
